How globalization has affected the Nahua population:

Globalization has a major impact on language, especially indigenous languages. Today, the Spanish language is overtaking the Nahuatl language, and it is a large part of why the Nahuatl language is disappearing. For example, Spanish is rendering the native language and culture of the Nahua people because most education that is being taught in Mexico is taught in Spanish. Language not only provides a medium of expressing meaning, but also ones culture and identity. Therefore, it is important to the Nahua that their language stay alive because if not it’s not only their language that will die, but also their heritage and traditions.

Background Information

The Nahua are primarily known because they are descendants of the Aztecs and have, therefore, inherited many different names. They are also referred to as the "Mexica" people, along with the name Nahuatl. Nahuatl is the name of their Mexican language from the root "Nahua," which means turquoise smoke. Around the fifteenth and sixteenth century, the Nahua people were known for being the most dominant civilization within Mexico. The Nahua people also base most of their success off of agriculture, however, they also focus on art and creation. The dominant religion followed by the Nahua is a mix of Catholicism and Native American traditions. Although the Nahua used to be an extremely dominant group, globalization has began to slowly diminish their customs and traditions, which is negatively affecting their culture and language

Vision: The iCross-Cultural Citizen Project’s vision is to create an online cross-cultural space for students, professionals, and youth to learn and exchange cross-culturally sensitive information about contemporary indigenous experiences. From that outsider student’s perspective, we will try to theoretically explore possible collaborative solutions to problems that affect the indigenous populations of our planet. Finally, we hope for the future creation of a space where indigenous youth can share their experiences and their realities with us for real mutual collaboration to take place.
