To the Nahua people, the "nuclear" family is the very important. The children of the Nahua people are given extensive love and and support from their family members. Education is valued high in the Nahua family and the parents support the continuing of education. Nahua families are large and normally include many children who are similar in age. Older sisters typically care for their younger siblings.
Family inheritance is usually equally distributed equal between male and female siblings. For females, land is acquired through the absence of male siblings. When the parents of the Nahua people become elderly, the house is usually taken in by the youngest son in the hopes that he will care for the elderly parents and the land.

ReplyDeletePlease, don't forget to work on your refs using the AAA style for the final eval. I think, the group just needs consistency in all publishing it uniformly one way. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt is clear that the Nahua people are big on family values. The customs of these people vary, but as a whole, marriage is an important aspect to the "nuclear" family. In the United States, the "nuclear family" is something we consider to be part of the "American Dream." This dream includes the successful family that lives in a nice safe neighborhood typically ranging in size of four family members. The nuclear family in the Nahua culture to me is seemed to carry traits of overall happiness within their daily lives. It is also important to keep in mind that the nuclear family as described in our textbook only lasts as long as the parents and children stay together. In a lifetime, it is believed that each person will be involved in two nuclear families in their life. This is because a new nuclear family is formed after marriage. I found it interesting that if eloping occurred, the father would often disapprove of the marriage at first but later approve. Also I found it to be different that the newly wed couple stays with the grooms family. I did not expect to learn that the parents value education and that the older siblings are to take care of the young. Gender roles are another important aspect of this culture because without the women in the house and the men doing the hard labor, the society wouldn't function smoothly.
ReplyDeleteKelly, why not use concepts like Ethnocentrism or cultural relativism when you make these comments. In particular, when making comparisons. Refs are looking great now. Thanks. If you add content, do it after your presentation. Now concentrate on your talk, and try to incorporate some course content during your discussion tomorrow. Good job!

When researching this tribe, I tried to keep an open mind and approach the findings from a cultural relativistic viewpoint. I found this very hard to do when knowing that the newly wed couple stays with the grooms family. I also did not expect to learn that the parents value education and that the older siblings are to take care of the young.
